Karhunkierros, Finland

  • Low key. Breathtakingly stunning. Peaceful

  • Being in the wilderness and running on a renowned hiking trail.

  • Sleep deprivation. Finland has 24/7 daylight during this time of year so I found it hard to rest prior to the event.

Also, wrong choice of footwear. I went with a bulky trail shoe for maximum cushioning and that hampered me. The trail conditions were so rutted, I almost tripped multiple times. As I became tired, this happened more often. Light grippy trails needed for this race.

  • Someone who likes something different and to explore a natural environment. It’s peaceful and about as away from city life as we know it.

  • Do your research and take the correct kit. Your kit is crucial & vital when undertaking an ultra race.

  • It was a long journey up to Ruka given the few domestic flights going northbound. But it’s definitely worth the travel.
